Arizona credit card, student loan debt drop in July

The average Arizona resident’s credit card debt continues to decline, according to a new report from Credit Karma.

The average credit card balance for an Arizona resident was $5,400 in July, which is $26 lower than in June and $1,053 lower than in July of last year.

Arizona’s credit card debt falls just below the national average of $5,480, according to Credit Karma’s numbers. That puts it in the middle of the pack for lowest balance in the nation at 20th out of 50 states.

However, when it comes to other forms of debt — auto and student loans in particular — the numbers creeped up this past month. The average auto loan balance in July was $16,552 compared to $16,274 in June and $15,940 in July 2011.

Arizona student loan balances averaged a whopping $27,846 in July, up from $27,367 in June. But, compared to July of last year, student loan balances are down from $29,214.
